A large-scale rescue and recovery operation is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a duo of missing sailing vessels transporting aid cargo traveling from Mexico to Havana.

Naval Search and Rescue Efforts Initiated

The Mexican government has dispatched navy personnel and search planes to search for the two vessels, which were carrying no fewer than nine personnel, as stated by a military release.

The vessels had been projected to reach Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, the navy said.

Context of Humanitarian Support to the Island

The Caribbean nation has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country grapples with multiple nationwide blackouts.

"The skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and each boat are outfitted with appropriate navigational gear and signalling equipment," an official involved in the effort said.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Earlier Relief Mission

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government widely celebrated and warmly received another boat that had transported a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the country.

That ship, dubbed "a modern Granma" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bikes and provisions.

Broader Geopolitical Context

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led initiatives to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the island nation was initiated.

Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" shortages of supplies, with more than fifty thousand surgeries postponed in Cuba due to power shortages.

Foreign policy measures have intensified lately, with comments from different representatives highlighting the complicated state of bilateral relations.

Reacting to certain statements, a senior government figure declared that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of talks were initiated, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The naval forces stated it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to locate the vessels and secure the security of the crews.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
