Their quest for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to witness again a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—a discovery that could contain the secret to his downfall permanently.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a vessel into a dimension later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in remote Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. The man in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is understood of his research, the case almost certainly contained samples of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would genetically impart to the children under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he struggles with the influence of a sinister presence, much like how Will Byers was controlled by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he commands the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between him and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a key upper hand in the series finale to come.
