Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks

NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this Tuesday, responding to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.

At that time, the league found that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering hard hits on opponents. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Latest Exchange

Wilson's response came after Payton made comments after the Broncos' remarkable comeback win over the New York. The coach remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.

Context of the Wilson-Payton Relationship

  • The quarterback joined the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M contract.
  • The team finished 4-11 in his first season prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in TV commentary.
  • Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the player from getting injured.

If Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the ugly breakup between the player and his coach.
